Voltage fluctuations are common and quiet high in our power lines. They harm your electrical appliances like television, refrigerator, air conditioner etc. and affect your valuable equipment critically, even leaving them in to a permanently damaged condition. A carefully selected, right kind of stabilizer can get you out of this problem. It prevents undesirable voltage fluctuations to enter in to your electrical appliances, thus making its operations trouble free.

Stabilizers (often termed as Automatic and Safe Voltage Regulators) are static devises to stabilize your utility voltage before feeding to the connected equipment. It recognizes the voltage fluctuations in the utility and regulates it internally to deliver a consistent range of output voltage, if your utility voltage is low; your stabilizer senses it, boosts it to the required level of voltage and then feeds to the connected equipment to work without troubles. This happens vice versa in case of a high voltage that appears in the utility line.

Generator How to choose the right stabilizer

Selecting a stabilizer is a critical matter. What you need to consider is the nature of fluctuation of power supply in your area and the ratings of the appliances you wish to connect. Note down the voltage, current & power rating of the device. It is usually mentioned on the specification sticker on your appliance. These details are also mentioned in the user manual.

First, you must note down power (in Watts) for all the appliances that will be connected to a stabilizer. The sum total of the power consumption (or Watts) will give you the load on the stabilizer in watts. However, most stabilizer sizes are in VA or kVA. To rough watt to VA, increase the Watts value by 20%.

For example, if 1000 Watts is connected to your stabilizer then you will need a 1200 VA or 1.2 kVA stabilizer. The 20% rule may not work in factories if the power factor is bad.

The working range of your stabilizer is decided by the voltage fluctuations in your locality. If the fluctuations are high then a wider working range is recommended.

Important Features to look out for in buying a stabilizer

  • Digital Display: The bold digital display allows you to easily see the voltage coming into the stabilizer from the main power source and the voltage going out of the stabilizer to your appliance.
  • Overload Protection: This feature ensures the tripping of the circuit breaker when the stabilizer is overloaded to prevent damage to appliances and stabilizer. The circuit breaker needs a manual reset when the overload condition is eliminated.
  • Wide Input Voltage Range: This feature ensures the stabilizer delivers safe voltage to your appliance irrespective of wide voltage fluctuations from the main power source.
  • Delay start (6s/180s): This feature enables you to select the time you want your appliance to start whenever power is restored. It prevents your appliances from starting and going off frequently during rapid power outages or extreme power fluctuations.
  • Cooling fan: This helps to cool the coils of the main transformer during operation thereby helping to prolong the life of the stabilizer
