How To Reduce Your Electricity Bills By Adjusting Your AC Temperature Settings

If you’re reading this, you’re probably one of those who set their AC temperature to around the mid-twenty degree mark when it’s hot and high teens in when it’s colder. But do you know how much these seemingly unimportant settings are costing you?


Did you know that minor adjustments to your air conditioning habits actually save you money?

1. What temperature should you set your air conditioner?

We recommend that you set you AC between 23 to 26 degrees always. Set to dry mode during the rainy season and cool mode when it’s sunny. This is to ensure maximum energy efficiency from your unit.

The Nigerian climate is quite hot, so it is natural that an AC would have to work harder to offset our harsh climate. When the weather is warm, you should set your AC cooling temperature a little lower than the room or environment. When it gets a little colder, as it does during heavy rains or harmattan, you should set it to a temperature just above the current environment so it’s not too cold.

2. How do temperature settings affect air con costs?

The harder your air conditioner has to work, the more electricity it will consume. This means that the lower you set the temperature when cooling, the more you’re adding to your power bill. This is due to the fact that AC’s like other electrical appliances, operate on an energy/work: money ratio. Here’s how to calculate your energy consumption rate.

The difference in costs/hour from daily calculations may seem insignificant, but they certainly accumulate, when it spans up to 30 days.

3.  Choosing the right sized air conditioner for your home

Generally, an AC should have at least 80 watts of output per square meter of room you intend for it to cool or heat. If a room is larger than the air con was designed to cater for, then it will be less effective at controlling the temperature – while your remote control might say the air con is set to cool to 24°, the room temperature might actually be 28°.

Conversely, if your room is too small for the air conditioner, the air con will over shoot the temperature that you intended to set it to.

Also, keep in mind the height of the ceiling in the room you’re looking to cool. The higher the ceiling, the more powerful your AC should be.

Finally, make sure the room you’re trying to cool is sealed up (Closed doors and windows) when the AC is on. This is to make sure that the AC works more efficiently or you run the risk of your air conditioner will have to work harder to reach the temperature you have set.

It almost goes without saying that you should try purchase an energy efficient air conditioner. This will drastically reduce the consumption rate of the machine, and consequently reduce your electricity bills.
